Sainsbury's, Church Street
Vectos was appointed by Sainsbury’s, following a successful planning consent, to progress the detailed design of the highway improvements required to facilitate a new 8,800 sqm retail store in Carlisle. The scheme consisted of £1.5m worth of S278 highway improvement works, including a new signaled site access junction, designed by Vectos Infrastructure.
In addition to the new access, a major 4-arm signaled junction at the intersection of Church St / Shaddongate required upgrading due to increase in capacity, as well as widening works along Shaddongate heading towards Carlisle Town Centre. As well as being located in a traffic heavy urban environment, the scheme also require major utility diversions both within the highway and also across the site.
Vectos were involved in the supervision of the construction phase. Given the location of the new store on a key radial route to Carlisle Town Centre, particular attention has been required to the impact on existing traffic during the works. Vectos progressed the detailed design through with the approval through Cumbria CC to allow a Sc278 agreement to be entered into and the construction to commence.
The construction and traffic management phasing was complex given the working restrictions associated with working in an urban environment. All the statutory diversions were undertaken at the same time as the highway construction works so the coordination had to be dealt with very carefully.
The works were completed and the unit opened on programme, with the store making a higher than expected profit within the first quarter of trading.
