BBC Television Centre
In December 2013, the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham (LBHF) resolved to grant planning permission for the redevelopment of the BBC Television Centre site. The site is located within the White City Opportunity Area which will see in the region of 5,000 new homes and 10,000 new jobs over the next 20 years.
The scheme comprises the provision of circa 1,000 residential units, office and commercial floorspace, along with the retention of some BBC and BBC Worldwide studios.
The development will result in a reduction in traffic generation due to a notable decrease in car parking. In addition, pedestrian and cycle access to, and permeability through, the site will be dramatically improved compared with the closed nature of the existing site. Construction works are due to commence in 2014.
Vectos acted as transport consultant to both Stanhope plc and the BBC in the redevelopment of the Television Centre site. The project required on-going liaison with Highways and Planning Officers at LBHF and Transport for London. Our role was to produce a Transport Assessment, Travel Plan and input into the Environmental Statement.
The application submission considered the future use of the site against the historic use of the site by the BBC. Key to the project was working with the BBC to establish the level of usage of the site under historic occupation. Technical work required the assessment of a range of flexible commercial land use scenarios in order to provide a robust assessment of the net change in trips by car, public transport, walking and cycling.
