Admiral Insurance Headquarters

Project Overview

The new 23,000 sqm landmark building provides a dedicated head office for Admiral Insurance to employ up to 3,000 staff when complete. Whilst the building is located in an enviable and prime position in Cardiff City Centre, this in itself created a number of highway issues during construction which were overcome by temporary redesign of local junctions and temporary full and partial road closures.

The 11-storey building provides 120 car parking spaces and 120 cycle parking spaces in two basement levels. Several small A3 retail units are also provided on the ground floor.

Our Approach

Vectos was appointed by Stoford to provide transport planning advice through the design stages and to support the planning application with a detailed Transport Assessment and comprehensive Travel Plan.

The car park design included a 2D and 3D appraisal of ramps, parking spaces and aisles using swept path analysis tools. This involved close liaison with the structural engineers and architects.

Vectos also worked with landscape consultants to review and improve the local urban realm. This included an appraisal of the local environment for access by all modes of travel which led to providing input to the redesign of local junctions to improve pedestrian crossing facilities and access for the mobility impaired.

The relatively small quantum of on-site car parking provision is balanced by a large on-site secure cycle parking provision and a detailed and comprehensive staff Travel Plan. Vectos undertook a travel survey of 1,700 existing members of staff to establish existing travel patterns and modal splits. This will be used to maintain the existing sustainable and ‘green’ ethos of the Admiral Group at their new headquarters building.
